Topics

Pastor Comments Ð Pastor Eastman:

  • Writing position description for childrenÕs choir director and senior bell choir director.

  • The childrenÕs choir director will be specific to directing the choir and not include the ÒextraÓ ministry that Michelle provided (e.g., crafts, social activities, etc.). Once an individual is hired for the childrenÕs choir director position, they may discuss with pastor and/or parents any desire for anything beyond ÒregularÓ childrenÕs choir directing.

  • If anyone knows of potential candidates for either position from within the congregation, they should contact those individuals directly and then have them contact Pastor Eastman is appropriate.

  • Barb Poulus taken to hospital on Sunday morning.

  • Both George and Carolyn Lukens were admitted to the hospital this past week.

  • Synod Assembly Jun 8/9 in Rosemont. Pastor Eastman is one of six candidates for Bishop of the Synod.

  • Pastor challenged the committee to consider, ÔWho Needs St. Paul?Ó She stated that as we continue conversations about the emerging church and the role of W&M, to consider what our unique gifts are and who needs what we have to offer.

  • Potential for Pastor Lieburg to meet with W&M and Youth Boards to discuss ideas on emerging church philosophy.

Council Update Ð Mark Demich:
  • Recent council elections resulted in Bob Hein being elected, and Patty Fess and Nick Poulus being re-elected to council.

  • Special congregational meeting called for Jun 24th to vote on extending call to Pastor Mark Williamson as our Associate Pastor.

Summer Worship Assistants Ð Connie Gerardi
  • Connie presented 5 options for scheduling summer worship assistants (due to lack of volunteers for 8am summer service)

  • Option #4 was selected and approved: for 8am service there will be 3 assistants (minimum) with congregation kneeling for communion and pastor and wine and grape juice starting at one of the rail and working their way across the entire rail to the other end

Contemporary Music Ð Maureen Hickey
  • Maureen presented a collection of information regarding the role of contemporary music in worship.

  • Several ÒtypesÓ of contemporary services were referenced.

  • The services spanned the continuum from ÒrockÓ to ÒsoftÓ and from exclusively contemporary to more traditional/liturgy-based with contemporary music throughout.

  • Maureen stated that the congregations where this was successful typically first introduced such music via prelude one Sunday, postlude another Sunday, choir another Sunday and then (finally) through the congregation as a whole.

  • W&M Committee was asked to thorough read sections 4 & 5 of the binder Maureen prepared.

  • Should St. Paul go down the path of a contemporary music service, there needs to be consistency and not simply once or twice a year. Consistency enables the congregation to learn the music, know what to expect and show-up at the specific service if thatÕs what they desire.

  • The committee stated that they would not agree to ÒlosingÓ the liturgy in such a service, but that the music could/should be built around the liturgy (not replace or ignore it).

  • It was also suggested to possibly try such a service Ð regularly Ð once a month for people to experience it for awhile.

  • The committee agreed that in order to continue this discussion/topic, both Pastor Eastman and Carl Heine needed to be a part of the next (and future) discussions on this topic.

Other Ð All
  • Committee voted to approve purchase (from W&M budget) to additional microphones that are the same as the one Pastor Eastman has been using for the last few weeks.

  • Pat Pape and Mark Demich will review the existing W&M budget to determine what line item to pull the money from.

  • Pat Pape will ask youth to participate in W&M committee meetings.

  • Darla Moore volunteered to be the W&M Publicity coordinator. She will work with Barb Warbianny and the office staff to ÒadvertiseÓ W&M happenings both within and OUTSIDE the congregation. (Thank you Darla!)

  • Cathy Godfrey presented various options for a wood ÒplaqueÓ for the center of the new processional cross.

  • Committee agreed to have one dove, with Òsquiggle linesÓ representing spirit separated by triangles representing trinity. Committee further agreed to have Cathy use her judgment regarding size/scale and exact shape of items on the plaque.

  • Angie Chase stopped-by to say ÒfarewellÓ (a bit early).
