Genesis for Grownups

Sunday, June 15

This week's story describes the
Lord's appearance to Abraham and Sarah who welcome strangers with food and drink and receive the promise of a son's birth to them.

Worshippers at St. Paul Lutheran Church-Wheaton will bring a recipe they prepare for special guests as a "prop" for the summer preaching series, "Genesis for Grownups."
 Sunday, June 22

The story of Hagar and her son being cast out of Sarah's tent, Hagar's despair, and God's providing for them and promising that the son will become a great nation.

As a "prop" for the story, worshippers may bring a gift
that came out of nowhere, took the person by surprise, or saved the person's life.
Sunday, June 29

The story of God asking Abraham to sacrifice his son will be the focus of this week's "Genesis for Grownups" sermon series.

Worshippers may bring something they would find it hard to give up or let go of.

Pitching Tent House Meetings
June 4 to August 17

Ever wonder what characteristic of St. Paul Lutheran Church is most important to others at church?

Or what their hopes for transformation might be?

Or where they envision St. Paul is being led in mission?

Join fellow members and friends of St. Paul at one of our Pitching Tent house meetings this summer.

This summer, July 21-29, sixteen St. Paul youth and adults are journeying to Mexico City to participate in a transformational immersion program of the ELCA’s Lutheran Center. We are so grateful for these twelve youth and four adults who are donating their time to follow God’s call, but even if you can’t go with us, you can still help out!

Please consider taking stock in St. Paul’s youth by buying at least one share of stock this May-June to support the trip. Each stock share is also a ticket to our Stockholders Banquet, held on September 14th, 2008, where trip participants will serve a thank-you Mexican dinner and share what they did on their trip and how they grew as disciples of Jesus. Shares are $20 each. Children under 12 may attend the dinner for free. Our goal is that every member of St. Paul would buy at least one share, not only to support the trip but also so everyone can come to the fiesta in September to hear about how our youth encountered Christ in Mexico and how they hope to serve as missionaries and agents of God’s reign in their home culture.

"Interested in investing? Please stop by the table in the narthex after worship on May 25 or June 1; reply to the congregational mailing; or contact Pastor Mark Williamson."

St. Paul  -  A Biker Friendly Church

One new and exciting way St. Paul is living out its commitment as an open, affirming, and inclusive church is by extending our invitation to Christian motorcycle riders looking for a place to worship.

The locally-based Illinois Chapter of Black Sheep Harley-Davidsons for Christ brought this need to our attention, and so we're welcoming the road missionaries of this organization as well as those who might spot us as a "Biker-Friendly Church" in the magazine
Wheels of Grace.

So if you see a guest or two or ten dressed in biker garb, don't forget to offer a hand and a smile and the peace of Christ!

St. Paul Men's Breakfast Group
Starts Summer Series on Surprised by Hope

Large and small group men's ministries will continue throughout the summer at St. Paul. If you've been on the fence about participating in our large group fellowship, which meets biweekly at 7 a.m. over coffee and donuts, now is a good time to get in on the conversation. Beginning June 8, the group begins discussion on Surprised by Hope: Rethinking Heaven, the Resurrection, and the Mission of the Church, the latest book by leading New Testament scholar N. T. Wright. A glance at our summer schedule gives you an idea of the contents:
  • Jun. 8: Puzzled About Paradise?: Christian Confusion about Hope (Chs. 1-2)

  • Jun. 21: The Strange Story of Easter in Its Historical Setting (Chs. 3-4)

  • Jul. 5: What the Whole World's Waiting For: Our Cosmic Future (Chs. 5-6)

  • Jul. 19: When He Appears: Jesus' Ascension and Coming in Judgment and Glory (Chs. 7-9)

  • Aug. 2: The Resurrection of the Body: Life After Life After Death (Chs. 10-11)

  • Aug. 16: Rethinking Salvation: Heaven, Earth, and the Kingdom of God (Chs. 12-13)

  • Aug. 30: Reshaping the Church for Mission: Living the Future (Chs. 14-15)
It’s summer, so come when you’re in town; read along with the group when you’re not. Questions about men’s ministries, contact Pastor Mark Williamson (mwilliamson.stpaul@sbcglobal.net). “No experience necessary!”
