Notes
for New Ushers
Arrive 15 minutes ahead of the service time. Bulletins are in narthex. If there are children's bulletins, take a few of each color.
If you are the first usher to arrive, stand in the center aisle, past the baptismal font. Otherwise stand on either side aisle in the back or by the doorway leading to the educational wing. After the announcements you can move to the narthex but be aware of people still coming in to church -and perhaps needing help to find a seat.
There are about 10 large print "With One Voice books" (the blue ones) in the bookcase in the narthex to the left of the Welcome Table. These would be for the people who sit in the chairs by the windows or for any others. No extra green hymnals in the narthex.
Check to see if the communion bread is there. If not, one of the ushers may have to go to Jewel on Willow and buy a loaf "King Hawaiian bread" a round loaf in an orange wrapper.
The attendance is generally taken when the kids leave for children's chapel. There's a form by the bulletin box. One of the ushers does this. He/She goes up to the balcony and counts from there, then will go to the nursery and then to the chapel where the kids are. Both rooms are near each other by the offices.
Be ready to take the offering after the peace is shared. The offering plates are by the bulletin box. Two ushers go up the center and one on each side aisle. Remember the people sitting in the chairs on the side. When it's time to go forward, the people with the bread and wine go first. Sometimes an usher needs to be the 2nd person. One or two ushers carry the offering plates and one or two ushers carries the food basket. That's the order for going forward. The pastor and assisting minister take the bread and wine, theacolyte takes the offering plates and then the usher goes up the stairs with the food basket
and places it in front of the altar. How everyone returns down the aisle to the narthex is an adventure. I can't tell you what the nonn is -follow your instinct.
The pew pads should be collected on the way back. Before going forward with the offering, the ushers should decide who will collect the pew pads -one usher for each side. Some pew pads won't be there. Look for them during communion if you're in the center aisle.
The pew pad sheets need to be removed after the offering. Take notice of visitors and put in separate pile. These are for the Welcome Center host who should come to the narthex table towards the end of the service.
Be ready to go forward for communion after the congregation is seated. The other ushers will take the lead.
After the service is over, pick up bulletins and other papers in the pews. Straighten the books and put the pew pads back in pews according to numbers (1 in the front, 12 in the back.) Take the food at the altar and put in hallway b the message box (near the church office.) Bring the basket back to the narthex. If the Welcome Center host didn't show up, bring the pew pad sheets to the office and put on one of the desks.
